SMASH is committed to eliminating the barriers faced by young underrepresented people of color in STEM and fostering their untapped talent for the advancement of our nation.

Break down barriers and strengthen connections between the Museum and its broader community by co-creating neighborhood-based arts experiences with artists, community organizations, individuals, and community leaders interested in using the arts to improve the quality of life.
Create lasting impact within communities of promise that improves community connectivity, well-being, and arts engagement.
Generate new pipelines for the next arts audiences, artists, donors, supporters and leaders; and create new and innovative opportunities for arts exposure experiences.

Morris Graves Museum of Art, Eureka, CA — Gallery Assistant

The Gallery Assistant position was an internship set up by Humboldt State University’s Art Department as a way to get experience and certified to work in a gallery or museum setting.
Gallery assistant handles phone traffic, prepare purchase orders and coordinate events and exhibits. During regular hours and special events, the gallery assistant ensures that the gallery is clean and that visitors follow the rules. We are responsible for monitoring and keeping artwork safe while the gallery is open.
Greet visitors, answer questions and field sales inquiries. As a gallery assistant we have to be personable, knowledgeable about artists and exhibits and have the ability to remember names and faces. Promote current and upcoming exhibits and ensure that visitors do not damage any works in the gallery.
Gallery assistant helps with the physical installation of exhibits. This may include painting or repairing walls and pedestals, allocating display materials and removing artwork when an exhibit is over. They may also operate audio-visual equipment and keep the gallery's website and social media outlets up to date.
